Our neighbors, a couple in their 80's, say that it's the best year for apples in at least 50 years! There are just so many, and they're big and many of them are perfect. Such an amazing thing for trees that haven't been sprayed for at least 33 years. Each one is a little miracle.
I started out by making my father's favorite dessert, "apple grunt". This is apples folded into an egg-y sort of cake-like batter, and then steamed for an hour or two. It used to annoy my mother that he called it apple grunt -- she felt that a grunt was a rude noise, and her apple dessert was called "apple pudding". She always made it for my dad, and he'd always thank her repeatedly for making him "apple grunt". Next I worked up the nerve to try making pie crust again. I had never had much success with pie crust -- but I tried Mark Bittman's recipe from "How to Cook Everything", and it turned out great. So I've made pie quite a few times this fall, including a quadruple recipe for the hotline training weekend. Now I've got no interest in store-bought pie at all. Why bother?
KarenAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1786422530390431742.post-86196076896881371862010-10-28T21:07:30.806-04:002010-10-28T21:07:30.806-04:00I love some (or really all) of the homemade specia...I love some (or really all) of the homemade special occasion dinners my husband makes...he's an amazing cook. Hi, my name is Kate and I'm a peanut butterholic.Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03524300903377509004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1786422530390431742.post-86978321665339484182010-10-27T19:31:38.944-04:002010-10-27T19:31:38.944-04:00I like food that is made by someone else. Someone ...I like food that is made by someone else. Someone who can bake. I like cookies. Chocolate chip, no wait PIE! I love pie! Blueberry, blackberry, apple, cheesecake which is like a pie and fresh salsa yum, shrimp, pizza, pale ale, (does that count if its home-brewed I'd drink it and that would be good, salad with some feta and some sort of crunchy nut on top but no olives in the salad, I'll always give the olives to the person sitting to my left, no reason, I'm not superstitious or anything, homemade ice cream, garlic and more garlic, fresh bread, cilantro, Thai coconut milk curry breath, nothing with meat, meat products, blood. I don't mind killing off lives I just don't wanna eat them after, like my cat when she catches a moth. Ok, you caught it, you killed it. Why eat it? What could there be in a moth that would make your walnut-sized brain say, hmm, maybe just a wing? She's gotta know its just gonna be horked up on the kitchen floor. If my cat were entering this contest she would say, catfood. I think she lacks imagination. She doesn't get out enough, well, at all. Her world does not exist beyond my kitchen, which is where I make food but you wanna know what my cat would like now? Have you ever cooked/baked for your cat? I mean beyond leaving the tuna can on the floor? They have dog food bakeries. Why not cat food? Not like, as in Korean food with a side of kimchi but home-made friskees. (my apologies to your Korean food lovers, no disrespect intended its just that I did not want to hear of anyone dicing and slicing Mr Wiskers after reading your comments). Cats like anything seafoodish which is strange because they hate the water and what makes them think that giving a cereal food product essence of salmon somehow makes it more appealing to the kitty? I digress. The cat will have to post her own comment. For me, I am going to say a fresh, warm, homemade Portuguese Muffin with blackberry jam. I can be reached in the Tech building and you should probably make three because Israel and LTS Ed will want them when they smell them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1786422530390431742.post-74917231224839238032010-10-27T15:28:59.141-04:002010-10-27T15:28:59.141-04:00my favorite homemade ITEM? i simply cannot choose...my favorite homemade ITEM? i simply cannot choose just one! butternut squash bread is one, fresh coconut poke cake is another, canned pickles with a bite yet another... :-) i could go on. that jam looks delish. it reminds me of the book my toddler and i just read yesterday- if you give a moose a muffin (it goes on to say he's going to ask for some of your mother's homemade blackberry jam!)
thanks!
shenais
divertida at fastmail dot fmmamipdxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09109151222694449731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1786422530390431742.post-9918244694429150272010-10-27T10:28:34.785-04:002010-10-27T10:28:34.785-04:00Happy Blogiversary Ally!
